Night
at Nemacolin Castle
September 18, 2010 from 8:00 PM to Sunrise
Located off the National Road, Route 40, in Brownsville,
Pennsylvania
Join American Hauntings for a
private,
overnight ghost hunt at Nemacolin Castle (or Bowman's
Castle) on the historic National Road. Overlooking the
city of Brownsville from a bluff on the
Monongahela River, the three-story mansion with its
ramparts and turret actually pre-dates the town. Built
on land where an Indian burial ground was located, the
castle was also the site of the French and Indian War
garrison, Fort Burd in 1759.
This was
also the destination of Chief Nemacolin as he led the
Cresaps across the mountains creating the Nemacolin
Trail, later to approximate the path of the National
Road. Because of
this, Brownsville was known as the “Gateway to the
West”. Join us on the night of March 6 as we offer
access to the reportedly haunted castle and spend the
night looking for the ghosts that are believed to wander
the hallways, passages and corridors. This is your
chance to find out if Nemacolin Castle is as haunted as
some people claim!
A portion of the proceeds go to the preservation of the
Castle!

More About the Castle and
its Haunts:
The builder of Nemacolin Castle was Jacob Bowman, who
established a trading post at the site of Fort Burd in
1786. It became a prosperous place on the National Road
but realizing that the huge cost of transporting good
across the mountains illustrated the need for goods to
be made locally, he built a nail factory, paper mill,
and produced machine parts.
He also became a Postmaster, Justice of the Peace
and established the first National Bank in the area.
As his wealth grew, so did his family. Now married
to Isabella and having fathered 9 children, there was
great need for a larger home. This led to the
construction of the central section of the house, built
around the original trading post and was completed in
the early 1800s. Jacob was also a practicing
abolitionist and the Castle became a stop on the
Underground Railroad, helping runaway slaves escape to
find freedom in the North. The Castle remained in
the Bowman family until it was donated to the Fayette
County Historical Society. It's now maintained by the
Brownsville Historical Society and is listed on the
National Historic Register.
Staff members and visitors to the castle have long
reported strange happening in the place, from heavy,
disembodied footsteps to slamming doors, erratic
behavior of lights and actual apparitions. The ghost of
a little girl, who is normally seen in the middle part
of the house, has been literally reported dozens of
times over the years. A small boy, an stern-looking
woman, a ghostly little dog and an elderly man who is
believed to be Jacob Bowman himself have also been
reported throughout the house!
Don't miss out on your chance to experience this
haunted part of American history!
