But even here, in the northern states, the specter of slavery, and of the Underground Railroad, still manages to make itself known. The house was built in 1858 by Alexander Moore Hannah, a prominent figure in Indiana history. Hannah was well-known in Indiana for his stand against slavery. As a fierce abolitionist, he opened his home to proponents of the Underground Railroad and it became a station on this secret system of helping slaves escape to freedom. It has been its role as an Underground Railroad that has caused Hannah House -- many believe -- to become one of the most haunted houses in America! Over the years, dark stories have circulated about moans, cries and weeping from the darkest corners of the house, causing stories to spread that perhaps some of the runaway slaves never escaped from the confines of the house!
