Built in 1816, the original one-room structure was expanded into a tavern and and inn in the middle 1800s by John Moore, a bridge engineer who went on to become a Confederate officer in Missouri during the Civil War. According to legend, he became acquainted with the Jesse and Frank James during the war and in the midst of their outlaw career of the 1860s and 1870s, he often offered them refuge at the hotel. In November 1928, Bertha was convicted of killing two people, but it's believed that she may have poisoned as many as 17 people from 1910 to 1928. The Morse Mill Hotel has a long history as a private residence, Confederate field hospital, speakeasy during Prohibition and a brothel -- all of which are believed to have contributed to its history of haunting activity.
