It was a bit of luxury in a town that was known for railroads, riverboats and 26 saloons with names like the "Bucket of Blood". Respectable travelers in need of a place to stay turned to this elegant hotel -- and some of them left a little piece of themselves behind. After World II and the end of the steamship and railroad eras, the world passed Grafton by and the town withered and died. The Ruebel Hotel went with it and by the 1980s, it was an abandoned derelict. In 1996, it was purchased by the Lorton family, who renovated, remodeled and restored the place to its former glory. Today, the hotel is considered one of the finest in the region and the Chicago Tribune ranked it as the "best overnight stay" and the "best food" along the Mississippi River. It's also one of the most haunted!   According to staff members and travelers, the Ruebel Hotel is haunted by not only past guests, but the ghost of a little girl who has been dubbed "Abigail".
