Join American Hauntings at one of the newest locations added to our roster – the sinister Pine Lawn Manor Nursing Home. If you’re looking for a location that hasn’t been overwhelmed with ghost hunters and TV shows, this is the place for you. Come along as we seek the spirits that linger at a place once known as “one of the worst nursing homes in Illinois.”

The history of Pine Lawn Manor is murky (at best) because it was never meant to be a historic site. No one kept track of things that happened here, but we do know that it began as a motel. Located along US Route 50 – often referred to as “America’s Loneliest Road” – the motor lodge thrived for many years since this was a major road between the east and west coasts. Once the interstate systems were constructed in the 1950s, though, small motels like this one faded out of business.

The building’s next incarnation was as a care facility for the developmentally disabled and remained open until the late 1980s, when budget cuts for mental health facilities forced the closure of many locations across the country. Those that remained open altered their design to become private centers for the elderly. Pine Lawn Manor was one of these, becoming an assisted living facility to provide care for people who required assistance with daily living. It was intermediate care for independent living – not for around-the-clock, skilled nursing care.

But tragically, it became a place of horror for many of those who lived there. Allegations of abuse and neglect surfaced, and inspections by state officials continually exposed problems with care and with the facility itself. After several deaths occurred, possibly from the poor conditions, Pine Lawn Manor made several lists of the “worst nursing homes in Illinois.”

Eventually, its reputation forced its closure in the early 2000s. It has been abandoned ever since – and according to all the stories, it’s a very haunted place. Over the past few years, numerous accounts have surfaced that lead anyone with an interest in hauntings to feel the place is teeming with ghosts.
