Footsteps around the old principal’s office.
A rolling ball in the gym.
Apparitions in the second-floor hallways.
Mysterious whispers in classrooms.

Join American Hauntings in the small Wisconsin town of Brodhead, a mysterious area with more than its share of local haunts. Its most famous, though, is the large, red brick building on 10th Street that was once the town’s only school. Today, it’s a haunted attraction called Brodhead Manor, but it’s not just props and effects that haunt the halls for the former school.

From tales of phantom children to shadowy apparitions, claims of REAL ghosts at Brodhead Manor are as common as the frights of Halloween attraction.

HISTORY

A vintage view of the old Brodhead School — it continued to operate, eventually as a middle school only, until 1996, when it was closed and abandoned for the next 20 years.

For many years, schools in the region were nothing more than one-room schoolhouses, scattered around the area and serving nearby families. In 1896, though, the community spent $14,000 on a building with four classrooms that took the place of the separate schools, but it was soon overcrowded. Finally, in 1907, a larger, brick building was built on the site, and it became Brodhead’s school for students from kindergarten through high school.

The new school was more modern than most had seen in small-town Wisconsin of the area. It had safe playgrounds, laboratory facilities, training courses, and special agricultural programs. During the new school’s early years, it was led by Principal Carl T. Pfisterer, who stayed on the local board of education for many years afterward.

By the mid-1930s, even the large brick building wasn’t adequate to meet the needs of the children in the Brodhead area. An addition was added to the building in 1939, nearly doubling the size of the school. The addition included a large library, gymnasium, and additional classroom space. The additional allowed the school building to continue serving as the town’s only school for more than two additional decades.

By 1960, Brodhead had grown to the point that a single school was no longer adequate, so a new, separate high school was constructed in November. The old brick school remained open as the middle school for the next 35 years. It was finally replaced by a modern building and closed for good in 1996. It was abandoned for the next 20 years.

In 2028, the school re-opened, but now as Brodhead Manor, a haunted house attraction. In the years since then, it’s continued to attract more thrill-seekers every season – as well as those looking for REAL ghosts.

Starting with the remodeling that was done when Brodhead Manor first opened – and continuing with spooky experiences reported by visitors – the building has quickly gained a reputation as one of the most haunted buildings in Southern Wisconsin.
