There is little of note about the history of Pine Lawn Manor, which once served as a care home for developmentally disabled adults – other than that it was reportedly closed because it was one of the worst facilities in the state around 2005.
The building began as a roadside motel but by 1970, had been converted into a nursing home for the elderly. By 1993, it had been changed into a care home for disabled adults. Although no paper trail remains to prove it, the facility was allegedly shut down in December 2005 due to patient abuse and neglect. Numerous complaints were said to have been filed with the state and a lawsuit filed in 2005 on behalf of several dozen residents at Illinois care facilities – including Pine Law Manor – highlighted the many problems, neglect, and funding issues.
If such reports are true, it certainly explains why restless spirits have refused to leave this place, re-living the most tragic moments of their lives over and over again.
Over the years, since Pine Lawn Manor has been closed, there have been many accounts of ghostly events that have spread through the nearby community and beyond. Paranormal events have been commonly reported here, especially unsettling and highly disturbing encounters that lead many to believe the abused and badly treated former residents have never left. Other reports have included unexplained footsteps, whispers, voices captured in recordings, inexplicable sounds, apparitions, and more.
