The town of Keithburg was established along the Mississippi River, west of Galesburg, in 1837 by Scottish immigrant Robert Keith. In the years that followed, the community flourished, thanks to flour milling and river traffic, although was devastated twice in its early years by Mississippi River floods.
The 1861 Masonic Lodge was built in 1861 as the Arlington Hotel and served river and highway travelers for decades. According to rumor, it wasn’t just a bed for the night that you could find at the Arlington – it was allegedly one of the busiest sporting houses in the region during many of its years of operation.
In the early 1900s, the Arlington Hotel closed, and the sturdy brick building became the Robert Burns Lodge #113 of the secret society known as the Freemasons. The Freemasons are one of the oldest fraternal organizations in history and members are bound together by initiation and ceremonial rites – all of which have been performed inside these walls.
The lodge was eventually abandoned and remained empty for years – abandoned by all by the spirits, clinging to the lives they once lived as residents of the building.
There have been scores of reports of paranormal activity at the 1861 Masonic Lodge, from disembodied footsteps to whispers and voices, mysterious laughter, slamming doors, the strange behavior of electrical devices, people being touched, full-blown apparitions and much more!
