You’ve seen it on television, and you’ve heard the stories – tales of violent apparitions, curses, ley lines, and burial grounds – but are you brave enough to experience Bellaire House in Ohio for yourself? Called “one of the most haunted houses in the world,” the Bellaire House is now open to American Hauntings guests! Join behind the locked doors of a house that has been gaining a reputation as one of America’s terrifying places!

The location of the Bellaire House has a long history in the region. Before the arrival of white settlers, several Native American tribes occupied the region, including the Mingo, Shawnee, and Delaware. All of them left a mark behind on the area before being pushed out by the treaties in the late 1700s.

A young George Washington explored and surveyed lands in the Ohio River Valley before the Revolutionary War. The ownership of local lands changed many times over the years, but it was John Rodefer and Jacob Davis who purchased land for a village in 1834. They surveyed six acres of building lot sites north of what is today Twenty-Seventh Street West toward Belmont Street. They named it Bell Air after Davis's former home in Maryland. Soon after, other settlers began to buy lots, and the town began to grow.

Thanks to its location on the Ohio River – and the construction of the Central Ohio Railway – the town grew rapidly. The town was renamed Bellaire by the railroad company. The Bellaire toll bridge (now abandoned and closed) was filmed in the 1991 motion picture, The Silence of the Lambs.

The Bellaire house sits atop what was once know as Coal Mine #1, owned by Jacob Heatherington, who operated most of the coal mines in the area. When Heatherington died, he left the land and house to his daughter, Eliza, and his son, Edwin. Not long after, though, Eliza died in the house, leaving Edwin heartbroken. Obsessed with the idea of contacting his sister on the other side, he turned to Spiritualism and began using mediums to try and reach Eliza. It is rumored that Edwin’s fascination with the spirit world and the occult has left the house vulnerable to paranormal events.

Many believe the house also rests along a ley line – one of the paranormal centers of energy that crosses the earth. These types of lines were suggested by Alfred Watkins in 1925 while researching the alignment of ancient sites. It’s believed they mark the lines of earth energy around the globe.

Combine the coal mines, possible spirit portals opened by Edwin, and ley lines with a nearby Native American burial site, and it’s no wonder that so many people believe this house is haunted by supernatural forces!

The Bellaire House began gaining its sinister reputation while abandoned for many years. Neighbors and curiosity seekers claimed they saw figures in the house or peering out of the windows, even though it was closed up and locked. Many blamed the “activity” on trespassers, but when current owner Kristin Lee moved in, she quickly began to realize that what was happening in the house was not the work of pranksters or neighborhood children.

Not long after moving in, Lee and her family were plagued by bad luck, oppressive feelings, and violent paranormal activity that included the family dog being thrown against a wall and Kristin being held down on a bed. One night, she event saw a grey apparition lean down over her as she was lying on the couch. Startled, she demanded to know who the man was that she saw, but he merely turned and walked away, slowly fading away as he went.

The physical attack on Kristin was the last straw for the beleaguered family, but, to their dismay, getting away from the house was not as easy as simply moving out. Lee first tried renting the house out to unsuspecting families – hoping for the best – but tenants never stayed more than a few months before moving out. They also experienced bad luck, had frightening encounters, and fled the place. Stories say there was one family that allegedly saw six deaths among their relatives while living in the house. They packed up and left for good – just in case.

After years of stress, Lee tried to get rid of the house by offering it to the village for $1, hoping to be rid of the mansion and the mortgage once and for all. But no one wanted it. The stories about the house were too well-known in the community and believed it was unsafe to live in it. Soon after, Kristin decided to open the house for investigation and research.

Since the house has been open to paranormal investigators, there have been scores of violent incidents and even alleged physical assaults that have occurred within its walls. One evening a staff member was carrying an armload of equipment down the stairs when he felt a strong tug on his clothing. Thrown off-balance, he stumbled, and his arm went through a second-floor window. The house was later featured on the television show “Paranormal Lockdown.”

Mysterious shadows, unexplained footsteps, phantom voices, doors that open and close, strange rappings --- these are just some of the happenings that have been experienced during investigations at the Bellaire House. The haunting is co extreme that many believe it even reaches beyond the house and to other buildings nearby.

If you believe that you’ve been “everywhere,” and there’s nothing that you’re scared of – then you’ve never been to Bellaire House. This is your chance to see if you’re really as brave as you think!
