ONE OF THE MOST HAUNTED PLACES IN AMERICA HAS BEEN SPARED FROM THE WRECKING BALL AND WE’RE GOING BACK TO SEARCH AGAIN FOR THE SPIRITS OF THIS HISTORIC OLD THEATER — ARE YOU READY?

Join American Hauntings at our ORIGINAL ghost hunting location where we began in 1994! We return to the historic and haunted Lincoln Theater in Decatur, Illinois and search again for the many spirits that linger in this historic downtown theater. Now under new management — and a new restoration project — the theater has been spared and has opened its doors again to American Hauntings. We hope you’ll be with us as we go back into the spooky confines of the Lincoln and rediscover this very haunted spot!

The Lincoln Theater

Built in 1916, the Lincoln Theater opened on the site of the former Decatur Arcade Hotel, which burned to the ground one year before work on the new theater began. The hotel was completely engulfed in flames and claimed the lives of an unknown number of guests — which may explain some of the lingering spirits in the theater!

But the Lincoln has plenty of its own history, too. It began as a vaudeville theater and was one of the leading Illinois theaters on the circuit, playing hosts to the biggest stars of the day. It was later converted to a movie theater until closing in the 1980s and re-opening for live theater and music shows for another decade or so. But time was not kind to the old place and it shut down again, suffering through failed attempts to restore it before it began to be marked for demolition. But luckily, thanks to new leadership, the Lincoln has been spared and will soon be opening its doors again.

Even though no audiences have been inside for years — the Lincoln has never been empty.

The spirits of the past are very much present inside the theater. Over the years, there have been literally hundreds of reports of strange encounters, eerie sightings, and unexplainable happenings. Author Troy Taylor has listed the Lincoln Theater as “One of the 10 Most Haunted Places in America.” The list of inexplicable events is long and includes:

  • Sightings of apparitions, moving seats, and movement of objects

  • Footsteps heard in the auditorium, on the stage, and in the basement

  • Figures in the balcony and the mezzanine

  • A very haunted spiral staircase on the stage that has been the site of dozens of encounters

  • Objects that vanish, lights that turn on and off, curtains that open and close on their own

  • coins that appear from nowhere and drop from the ceiling

  • and much more!

Over the years, American Hauntings has hosted dozens and dozens of ghost hunts at the Lincoln Theater and its been the site of many events and even the Haunted America Conference and attendees are rarely ever disappointed when they leave. It is — quite literally — the most consistently active place that we have ever hosted events and with a new restoration going on, it’s unlikely that has changed. Come back to the Lincoln with us and find out for yourself if it’s truly as haunted as we claim it to be!
